Farm Diary - Winter

  • This is a time for general farm maintenance such as fencing. Hedging and machinery repair.
  • Lamb sales continue into December.
  • Cattle sales of animals that have been fattened for the meat marked take place through the winter months, along with animals that are also going to be sold for breeding. Most of our cattle are pure bred traditional breeds ie, Aberdeen Angus, Hereford an Highland, and therefore most of our females are pedigree registered and are either retained by ourselves to join our herd or sold to other pedigree breeders throughout the United Kingdom, and further afield.
  • Cattle that are brought in at the start of winter are fed silage and hay and our home grown grain daily. Outdoor cattle are also fed silage and hay and also some home grown grain. Sheep feeding commences in January. Ewes are often scanned to enable those carrying twins or triplets to get extra food. In the lead up to lambing the feeding of the ewes increases and included some concentrates, to help the unborn lambs
